Providing benefits and security to members has been a long-standing reputation of unions.
More than 35% more union workers have access to retirement benefits and over 20% more have access to healthcare1 compared to nonunion workers.
However, nonunion employers are starting to catch up in their benefit offerings, with some now offering benefits that go beyond healthcare and retirement to attract and retain better talent.
What Benefits are Workers Most Interested In?
Outside of healthcare and retirement benefits, workers are looking for benefits that can help in their daily lives, reduce stress and assist them financially.
A 2020 Employee Benefit Trends Survey2 asked workers about their most-desired benefits. Among those at the top of the list were legal benefits and identity theft protection.
A combined 84% of workers said identity theft protection was a ‘must have’ or ‘nice to have’ benefit, and 81% said the same about legal services.
Financially-oriented benefits also ranked high, as inflation and the pandemic have strained households. Financial education and planning tools received votes from 85% of workers as a desired benefit.
Finding packaged benefit plans is a smart way to affordably cover a variety of these highly requested benefits from workers.
What Kind of Effect Can These Benefits Have
Financial strain, unforeseen legal issues and a stolen identity are all stressful events that can have effects through all areas of life.
Legal troubles(3) and recovering from identity theft4 can have far-reaching effects, including:
- Stress-related illness or health issues
- Income loss or financial strain
- Relationship breakdown
- Difficulty focusing
- Sleep issues
Providing benefits that help members solve these issues quickly and easily, or prevent them altogether, can help them avoid these struggles that arise from these stressors. It's also a great way to improve loyalty among members as they see the additional ways you have their back and care about their well-being.
Grow Your Union
Bringing in and retaining more of the best and brightest workers is easier when offering a robust benefits package that outshines the competition.
Recent surveys of workers5 showed that benefits were the greatest factor when determining which job to take for 66% of respondents.
Going above and beyond in offerings is the best way to stand out to this crowd and differentiate your union or company from the pack.
As life continues to get more complicated and full of potential threats, unions can leverage benefits that will help protect their members and increase solidarity.
The Member Resources Legal and Personal Protection Plan is a simple and affordable way for unions to provide benefits like these to their members, along with many more services such as custom communications and a member service team to help members when they call.
